Phenotype:
Description of White Spotting mutants
Description of White Kit mutants
A dominant mutation that is lethal in the homozygous state. Mice
that carry the mutant allele are black with white spotting;
homozygous +/+ mice are solid black. Heterozygous mice
with the mutant allele have fewer pigment cells (more white areas)
than heterozygous mutant mice on the C57BL/J background.
Please note: This strain is identical to MMRRC:000178 in every aspect except that strain 178 has a high incidence of hypopigmention whereas 177 has a "normal" or average level of expression.
In this collection of mice, the identical allele of origin is expressed in five different degrees of severity (stocks 173, 174, 175, 177, 178), depending upon the congenic background, and within the congenic mice upon two (or more) discrete modifying genes that have been maintained by selection. This stock (MMRRC:000177) was created by backcrossing the original mutant, which was obtained from The Jackson Laboratory, where the mutation occurred in the C57BL/6J stocks of Dr. Elizabeth Russell, onto a JU/CtLm background. The allele is homozygous lethal. Heterozygotes exhibit at least twice as much white area as the same allele on the B6 background.
Founder genetic background: C57BL/6J
Strain genetic background: JU/CtLm (MMRRC:000136)
Strain Development:
Spontaneous mutation arose on a C57BL/6J; subsequently
backcrossed to JU/CtLm.

Maintain these mice on a 9% fat breeder chow. Suggest use non-spotted JU/CtLm inbred females each generation if being maintained over a period of time. Kit heterozygous mice (KitW-2J/+) have fewer oocytes than normal mice and also the homozygotes are lethal in all cases, so spotted males should be mated to black females in all cases when possible. They should be mated when young. Each of these stocks is best maintained by intercrossing.
Mice recovered from a cryo-archive will have health surveillance performed on the resuscitated animals.
Limited quantities of breeder mice (recovered litter) are available from a cryoarchive; recovered litter usually available to ship in 3 to 4 months.
Distribution of this strain requires submission of the MMRRC Conditions of Use (COU). A link to the COU web form will be provided via email after an order has been placed; the form should be completed then or the email forwarded to your institutional official for completion.
Additional charges may apply for any special requests. Shipping costs are in addition to the basic distribution/resuscitation fees. Information on shipping costs and any additional charges will be provided by the supplying MMRRC facility.

1 The distribution fee covers the expense of resuscitating mice from the cryo-archive; you will receive the resulting litter. The litter will contain at minimum one breedable mutant carrier; the actual number of animals and the gender and genotype ratios will vary. (Typically, multiple breeder pairs can be established from the recovered litter.) Prior to shipment, the MMRRC will provide information about the animals recovered. If you anticipate or find that you need to request specific genotypes, genders or quantities of mice in excess of what is likely from a resuscitated litter, you may discuss available options and pricing with the supplying MMRRC facility.
2 An aliquot contains sufficient material (volume and concentration) for at least two IVF or several artificial inseminations (based on our procedures). The MMRRC makes no guarantee concerning success of these procedures when performed outside the MMRRC facilities.
3 An aliquot contains a sufficient number of embryos (in one or more vials and based on the transfer success rate of the MMRRC facility) to transfer to at least two recipients. The MMRRC makes no guarantee concerning embryo transfer success experienced in the recipient investigator's laboratory. Neither gender nor genotype ratios are guaranteed.
